What are Social Communication Challenges (Pragmatic Language)?
Social communication—also known as pragmatic language—is the foundation for meaningful connection in our daily lives. It includes knowing how to start and end conversations, take turns speaking, interpret body language, understand humor, and adjust how we communicate based on who we’re talking to. These skills are essential for building relationships, participating in school or work, and engaging confidently in the community.
For individuals with autism spectrum disorder, brain injury, ADHD, or other neurological conditions, these interactions can be confusing, overwhelming, or difficult to navigate. Challenges may include difficulty reading facial expressions or tone of voice, maintaining appropriate eye contact, understanding unwritten social rules, or managing emotions during conversation.
At Freedom Physical Therapy Services, our speech-language pathologists provide a supportive and personalized approach to improving social communication. Through evidence-based techniques, structured practice, and real-world scenarios, we help clients of all ages strengthen the skills they need to connect more confidently with others. Whether in one-on-one sessions or group settings, therapy focuses on building awareness, increasing flexibility in thinking, and improving social-emotional understanding.
By addressing the unique needs of each individual, our goal is to foster greater independence, enhance social participation, and improve quality of life—one conversation at a time.
