Spring Cleaning Safety

Spring is historically one of the most popular times for people to move or just clean out their homes. Kids are moving home from college. Families are preparing to move at the end of the school year. New professionals are moving to start their careers. Some people are just trying to declutter from the winter and holidays. Whichever category you may fit into and all those in between, Freedom wants to keep you safe during the annual spring cleaning and move-out season! Here are some spring cleaning safety tips.

Here are 5 tips to keep you safe with your upcoming move:

1.Start Small and Pace Yourself

Try to plan so that you can space out your move if possible. Otherwise, giving yourself set rest breaks is a great way to keep your body safe. This will allow your muscles to have the appropriate time to recover in between the items you are moving.

2. Pack Evenly and Securely

When packing up a box, remember to spread your heavy items out across several boxes. Before packing, make sure you are using heavy-duty boxes that won’t break when you carry them.

3. Clear a Path

Make sure that your walkways are free of clutter and rugs so that you don’t trip. Mark doorways and stairs so you know where to step up or down.

4. Use Proper Lifting Form

Don’t forget to squat when you pick up items off the floor. This will help keep your back straight and limit spine pain and muscle soreness after your move.

5. Ask for Help

When in doubt, ask for help! Trying to lift a box that is too heavy or maneuver bulky furniture alone is a quick way to land yourself in a doctor’s office. If you think something is too heavy, ask for help. Try to plan out your move so you can organize your goods and move everything that requires 2+ people when your help is there. Work on moving the items you can before your help is available. Carts are a great way to move items in and out of spaces without stairs so that you can still have a quick move without the injuries that could come from moving too much too fast alone.

We hope these 5 tips keep you safe and healthy this spring! If you experience any aches or pains during your move, reach out to one of our team members to schedule a session with one of our therapists today! They will be sure to get you back out there and keep you moving safely!
