Course Overview

Are you ready to level up your TMD treatment knowledge? Most physical therapy programs spend 2-4 hours total in school on temporomandibular disorders and most do not cover craniofacial pain. This two-day course provides an introduction to temporomandibular disorders and craniofacial pain. The course takes you through anatomy, normal and abnormal biomechanics, differential diagnosis, and the inter-relationship between the cervical spine and the TMJ. The lab components of this course allow participants to palpate anatomical structures as they relate to the TMD and CFP. You will also learn how to mobilize the TMJ and upper cervical spine. In addition to the hands-on learning, Michael Karegeannes provides takeaways from the course which include marketing, building a rapport with the dental/healthcare community, and other interventions to allow for the best possible outcomes for your patients. About Michael Karegeannes

Michael Karegeannes is the owner of Freedom Physical Therapy Services, an outpatient independent private practice in Wisconsin with four locations. Michael has practiced physical therapy since 1989. His specialties include TMD, spine and pelvic dysfunctions, myofascial pain, and orthopedic therapies. Michael had the honor of being trained by Dr. Mariano Rocabado, in conjunction with the University of St. Augustine, who is the leading national expert in the field of craniofacial therapies. In addition, Michael has attended an orofacial pain and TMD Residency with the University of Minnesota Dental School. Michael also went through the strenuous process of becoming a Certified Cervical and Temporomandibular Therapist (CCTT) through the Physical Therapy Board of Craniofacial and Cervical Therapeutics (PTBCCT).

Description of the Course

This TMJ course teaches the anatomy and biomechanics of the normal temporomandibular joint, as well as, abnormal mechanics or pathophysiological mechanics that will require a comprehensive evaluation and treatment approach. This course is designed to help differentiate myofascial-related pain from internal derangements and educate on the interrelationships between the cervical spine and the TMJ. Participants will gain insight into a basic home exercise regimen for their patients. There will also be discussions about appropriate orthotic therapy, lifestyle changes, potential surgical interventions, and how to build rapport with the dental community and other healthcare providers so the best possible outcomes can be achieved for patients.

Molly Rittberg received her master’s degree in Physical Therapy in 2007 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and went on to receive her doctorate from Rosalind Franklin University (North Chicago) in 2009. She has since worked in an outpatient orthopedic practice where she worked with patients of all ages, injuries and disabilities. She has a wide variety of experiences including knee, ankle, foot and shoulder injuries, post-operative conditions, spinal rehabilitation and peripheral neuropathies.
